Obituary for Dolores Hyson (Cuff)

Mom, Dolores Hyson, is finally home. She made that journey on Sunday, April 7, 2019.

Mom was born in Bridgetown, NJ, on Jan 22 1935, to the home of Harold and Carolyn Cuff. She was the youngest of 5 children.

After high school graduation she had planned on attending Eastern Nazarene College. Those plans changed when the money she had saved was needed to help pay for her father’s medical expenses. Had she gone to college, she may never have met the love of her life, Frank J Hyson, at the local skating rink.

On June 27, 1953, mom established her own home, with Frank Hyson. Anyone who knew her, knew she was part of a dynamic pair.

They welcomed a son, Dr. Ronald Hyson, who married Brenda (Stark), and calls Dallas his home. Six years later they welcomed me, Cindy Thorpe. I live here in Wooster, with my husband Tim. Mom would tell you that her pride and joy, is her only grandchild, Stephanie Joy Graves, Ron and Brenda’s daughter. Stephanie is married to Philip and calls Dallas home.

Mom was a homemaker who had many gifts, several of which stand out. First, the gift of hospitality. She welcomed any opportunity to organize a gathering. Our home was always open to friends, as well as “soon to be friends”, but her hospitality reached outside those walls.

Mom demonstrated the gift of generosity and taught me what that truly means.
She was generous of material and spiritual things, freely giving to others, no strings attached. Many gifts were personal, others more broad reaching, like the Hyson Scholarship Fund at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, established so that others would have the opportunity that wasn’t afforded her.

Mom’s greatest gift was her quiet way of sharing her love for Jesus Christ.

My brother and I wish to thank everyone who lovingly shared in the care of our mother at West View Healthy Living, Danbury and through Life Care Hospice. A special thanks to her friends who loved and supported all of us through her journey home.

A memorial service will be held at Custer Glenn Funeral home on Thursday, April 11 at 11:00. Friends are welcome to visit with us the hour before the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Hyson Scholarship Fund at Mount Vernon Nazarene University, 800 Martinsburg Rd, Mount Vernon, Ohio, 43050.
