Obituary for Duane Eugene Singer

Duane Eugene "Butch" Singer, age 75, of Ashland, Ohio, passed away after an extended illness, Saturday, February 13 at home with his family by his side.

He was born on June 27, 1945, the son of the late Burl and Luella (Horst) Singer.

Butch grew up in Smithville, Ohio where he graduated from high school in 1963. While there, he lettered 4 years in baseball, 2 years in basketball, and 1 year in track.

He then attended Ashland College, earning a Bachelor of Science degree, and after graduating in 1967 married his high school sweetheart, Pamela Sue Daugherty.

He taught Junior High Math for 32 years at Madison Local Schools and retired in 1999. After substitute teaching for a year he returned to a full-time position as a high school math teacher at Ontario Local Schools, where he taught for 2 more years before officially retiring as an educator.

Butch enjoyed working at Brookside Golf Course for 20 years where he pursued his passion on the links and in the clubhouse, spending hours kibitzing with his golfer friends. He also loved playing softball, did so for years, and in 1975 was honored by being chosen as a member of the All World Softball Team while playing for Mansfield Plaza 76 in the World Open held in Cleveland, Ohio. He was inducted into the Mansfield Softball Hall of Fame in 1992.

He also loved boating with his kids and grandkids, skiing and tubing with them or just floating on the lake communing with nature. He was a proud father and grandfather, constantly attending baseball, soccer, football and basketball games. His greatest joy came from his family as he participated in their lives.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years; 2 sons, Ben (Heidi) Singer of Silver Lake, Ohio, and Brandon (Amanda) Singer of Medina, Ohio; 3 granddaughters, Madelyne, Amelia, and Cassidy Singer; 2 grandsons, Peyton and Oliver Singer; 2 sisters, Peg (Larry) Imhoff and Lois Burns, both of Wooster, Ohio; brother-in-law, Raymond (Rosie) Besancon of Wooster and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Joanne Beichler and Louise Besancon; mother and father-in-law, Ralph and Carol Daugherty; sister-in-law, Beth Hackett and a brother-in-law, Carl Whitey Beichler.

Because of the current public health concerns, the family will be having a small private Celebration of Life at their convenience.

Custer-Glenn Funeral Home, 2284 Benden Dr. in Wooster is honored with serving the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Duane Singer to Ohio's Hospice LifeCare, 1900 Akron Rd., Wooster, Ohio 44691 or American Cancer Society, 721 Milltown Rd., Wooster, Ohio 44691. Or simply donate to someone you love by doing something kind for them.

The family wishes to thank Ohio's Hospice LifeCare for the wonderful care they provided for Butch throughout his illness. All staff, including receptionists, nurses and doctors were wonderfully supportive and compassionate. They were our angels guiding us through a very difficult time.
