Obituary for Mary Rita Kearney (Schafrath)

Our Beloved Mom, Grandma, GG, Aunt Mary passed away peacefully surrounded by members
of her family who loved her so. We are so grateful that she didn’t suffer pain, and was lucid till the end.

She was welcomed to heaven by our dad, John Patrick Kearney, “Pat”, grandson Ryan Kearney, daughter-in-law, Christine Kearney, her parents, and all of her 10 siblings.

She is survived by her children and brother David (Wanda) Rohr of Wooster.

She would have been 100 on September 29, 2021.

We will be celebrating her life with a Catholic Mass at St Mary’s Church in Wooster at 10am on Monday June 14 th with burial following at St. Mary Cemetery, Wooster, Ohio.

Born in Canton, Oh, and raised in Wooster, she was daughter to Leo and Clara (Rohr) Schafrath along with 7 brothers and 3 sisters. She was the only child in her family to get a HS diploma, and her father’s supreme compliment of “being able to handle a team of horses”.

She married our dad on December 28, 1942. About a year later they moved from Wooster to Berea, Ohio. They raised 11 children, Mike (Chalow), Joe (Susan), Tim (Pat), Dan (Nancee), John (Sandy), Pat (Floyd Cornelius), Chris (Nancy), Mary, Maureen (Brian Craig), Matt (Beth) and Mark (Marcia). She loved all 26 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren who knew her as GG. Mom knew them all, danced at her grandchildren’s weddings, held all the babies, and even baptized a few of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Who can imagine living such a long, rich and fulfilling life? She was a devout Catholic, singing in the choir, attending Mass daily, praying the rosary, working with her groups to raise funds for overseas missions, and a team cleaning St Mary’s Church in Wooster. She travelled in the early 80’s all over the country, and Ireland, England, Scotland, and Germany. Mom was an avid Notre Dame football fan and Indians baseball fan and a champion Euchre player. During 2020, she added Zoom call leader to her list of accomplishments to the delight of her children and grandchildren allowing them to stay in touch during the pandemic.

Many thanks to the staff at The Avenue who cared for her lovingly and helped her through the rare glitches in signing on to her IPad each day at 2pm to see who’d be on the Zoom calls.
She left us many happy memories, along with scores of handmade afghans, slippers, and pinecone wreaths. Most heartwarming was basking in her attention. She had a way of always making you feel like you mattered.

She was the definition of charming...it was her nature to be truly interested in people. She loved babies’ laughter, a good joke, and occasionally, a good Scotch. She hated frivolity, revered practicality, and as a depression era child, she was frugal.

Mom taught us how to make lebkuchen cookies, pizzelles, her baked bean casserole, and doughmess, how to sew, crochet, change an electrical cord, fix a leaky faucet, and hang wallpaper. In addition to all these activities, she also took on her annual summer tasks of teaching many of her 11 to ride bikes, play baseball, drive, and preserve many quarts of fruits and vegetables. Mom completed any necessary house painting, both inside and out.  In effect, she was the “first responder” to just about every household event imaginable - and then some.

She’ll be missed most of all, for her gift of making whomever was in her presence, be it one of her many
children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, or friends feel like the most important person to her. And, through her love, she was a second mom to many. To be put at the top of her Prayer List was the supreme compliment. She can probably teach the angels in heaven a few things, too!
