Obituary for Miriam Jean Terman (Leighty)

Miriam Terman, age 87, of Wooster, passed away Monday, May 17, 2021 at LifeCare Hospice in Wooster following a sudden illness.

She was born October 20, 1933 in Wooster to George and Ruth (Bahl) Leighty, the 10th of 12 children.

In 1956, Miriam married Kenneth Terman, who died in 1986.

A graduate of Wooster High School, her first job was as a "soda jerk" at Stype's Drug Store.

Most recently, she worked at The College of Wooster Student Wellness Center, retiring in 2019 at the age of 85 years young. Among her previous employers were Bob Snyder Ford and Martin Interiors, both in Orrville.

A longtime antiques dealer, Miriam, along with her husband, owned and operated two local antiques shops, Terman Antiques and Riceland Antiques, as well as an earlier used furniture store in Orrville in the late 1950s.

An avid collector and creator of dollhouses and miniatures, she was a member of the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts. Miriam’s innate creative touch made everything more beautiful, and she delighted in designing outdoor garden spaces for her family to enjoy. She was a member of the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Cleveland Botanical Garden and had played the piano, organ and other instruments since childhood.

She most recently attended Trinity United Church of Christ and was a founding member of Christ Church of the Brethren.

Miriam is survived by two children from her first marriage (Ernest Yates), Rick (Margaret) Yates of Port Angeles, Washington, and Mindy (Jerrold) Albright of Wooster; as well as two daughters from her marriage to Kenneth, Carol (Tom) Polakowski of Lyndhurst, Ohio, and Elaine Terman (Evan Galasso) of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; grandchildren, Franz (Donna) Albright, Emil Albright, Ewen Albright and Yannick Terman; a great-granddaughter, Marina Albright; a brother, Clifford (Virginia) Leighty, and a sister, Eunice (Gerald) Yates; sisters-in-law Judy (John) Leighty and Mary Lou (Thomas) Leighty; and many nieces and nephews. She also had many friends in Wayne County and the Cleveland area, where she made frequent visits to her daughters’ homes.
