Obituary for Roger L. "Skip" Saurer

Roger L. "Skip" Saurer, age 77, of Wooster, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Ohio's Hospice LifeCare with his family by his side after a courageous year long battle with cancer.

Roger was born on October 21, 1944 in Wooster, to Roger C. and Dorothy (McCartney) Saurer. His father was a B-24 Liberator pilot in WWII and was killed in action on March 9, 1945. His mother later married Donald Barnes when Skip was two years old. He graduated from Wooster High School in 1962 and Grace College in 1966 with a B.A degree in English. He taught one year at Triway High School and then taught 2 years at Amazon Valley Academy in Belem, Para, Brazil.

He received his M.Div degree in 1973, his D.Min. in 1980, and then his M.Ed in 1987.

His career took him to several school systems including Worthington Christian Schools, Ashland College, West Holmes Local School District, Wayne County Joint Vocational School, Dalton Local Schools and retired as Superintendent at Copley/Fairlawn Schools. Throughout his life, he enjoyed serving in many capacities with his educational endeavors.

Roger married Susan Kittle on August 28, 1970 and they enjoyed 51 years together.

Like his father before him, he received his pilot's license and enjoyed many years of flying. He also enjoyed target shooting, motorcycle riding, and his BMW Z3 with his son and family. He loved spending time with his loved ones, especially with his granddaughter Madison. He and his family attended the Wooster Church of the Nazarene.

Surviving in addition to his wife, are their son, Steven R. Saurer (Courtney), granddaughter, Madison Saurer; sister, Carole VanPelt (Travis) of Wooster; brothers, Larry (Deb) Barnes of North Lawrence and Darrel (Natalie) Barnes of Ashland.

His parents preceded him in death.

A private family service will be held this week with Pastor Nathan Ward officiating. Burial will follow at Wooster Cemetery.
